Per the State Board of Barbering & Cosmetology, the following requirements are mandatory for acceptance:

  • Earned ten total high school credits
  • Must be 16 years of age by the first day of classes: July 21, 2027

  • Express individual creativity by providing a wide range of artistic hair services using the latest technology, trends, and name-brand products.
  • Work alongside professional cosmetologists to evaluate, recommend, and create unique hair designs.

Career Focus

  • The first step to earning your hairstyling license is to successfully complete the CAVIT two-year, 1000-hour program. At the end of the program, it’s time to earn your licensure by passing the state’s two exams. Finally, it’s time to update your resume and apply for and land a hairstylist position.

  • Infection Control/Disinfection, State Laws/Regulation, Anatomy, and Chemistry and Pharmacology – 250 Hours

  • Haircutting, Hair Coloring, Chemical Texture/Rinses, Hairstyling, and Thermal Design – 700 Hours

  • Salon Operations, Management, Marketing, and Board Exam Prep – 50 Hours

Hairstylist Entry Level Salary Range*

  • Hourly: $12.25–$17.58
  • Annual: $25,480–$36,570
